Requirements to Study Nursing in Canada

If you want to study nursing in Canada, you should be glad to know that there are lots of scholarships available for students who intend to pursue a nursing career at a university in Canada. However, for this post, we will look at some of the requirements and pre-requisite that you should meet in other to be eligible to study nursing in Canada.

Admission Requirements

The following requirements must be met in order to be eligible for admission into the nursing program:

  1. High school graduation (GED) or equivalent (SAT scores may be considered if documentation is provided).
  2. College degree (Associates Degree) with no grade lower than C- or its equivalent (ACT scores may be considered if documentation is provided).
  3. A college transcript must be received before admittance into the baccalaureate program.
  4. The college transcript must contain at least 2 semesters of courses taken toward a degree and should indicate completion of courses required for admission to the baccalaureate program. The transcripts should also show satisfactory academic progress throughout the entire period of study and indicate courses completed at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
  5. Transcripts may be required by an Admissions Committee when applying for a Nursing Science Baccalaureate Program scholarship or other merit-based award. For a detailed description of how to obtain these transcripts and more information on what documents are required, click here.
  6. Prerequisite Courses for Admission: A list of pre-requisite courses is listed here. Note that all pre-requisite courses are offered through nursing departments at several institutions in Canada. It is not mandatory that students obtain these courses from their institution, however it is strongly recommended.
  7. All other programs are encouraged to consider this option as well. Additional pre-requisite courses may be required by individual departments for admission into specific areas of study.
  8. All documents submitted to any faculty member should include: An application form signed by the student (provided by nursing)
  9. A personal statement on why the student wants to become a nurse
  10. An evaluation from a health care professional familiar with the student’s ability and knowledge
  11. The pre-requisite courses taken, which may be found on the respective nursing departments website
  12. These letters are not required for application but provide helpful information about the student’s past education and life experiences. In some cases, they may also confirm completion of certain courses, degrees or credits which were previously omitted from transcripts submitted to schools/universities.
