The MC can do more early on than if they had little to no influence due to being an ancestor of a clan rather than a descendant. But this isn’t done very effectively. He behaves like an ancestor in other books, although he appears to be a supporting character or even just an NPC because he is not a prominent figure.

They could have adopted this role and created a different kind of novel, but they continue to aim for the typical Chinese novel MC. You may occasionally find yourself wondering what you are reading and who you should be focusing on because it doesn’t suit that character trope. Excellent concept, but poor execution.
